[Review] Marvel Collector Corps August 2016 Spider-Man Unboxing

When Funko revealed that the August box was going to be filled with Spider-Man goodies, I was tempted to get it (because who doesn't love him right?) but the price of getting an item as big as a MCC box imported to Singapore always got me thinking twice. However, seeing how amazing our recent boxes are (Civil War box and Squirrel Girl Pop! from Women of Power box), I decided to place my faith in Funko for an amazing Spider-Man box and damn did we get many Amazing (pun intended) Spider-Man items.

Compared to the Civil War box, the Spider-Man box features a classic Spider-Man head and a longer and slimmer box.

Opening the box, we have the comic-styled collage of our favorite web-crawler in action as well as the guaranteed pin and patch. While the pin features the Spider logo, I would have liked a pin with Spidey's head instead. Most, if not all, past boxes feature the head of a character on the pins and it's only in the recent Year One box that we got a logo. That said, a pin with Spidey's head would fit in much better when displayed with other pins. A classic fat spider logo patch would've looked funny (in a good way) and amusing as well.

 Under the top layer...

On the front of the card, we have details about the concept work and ideas that the Funko design team go through to the finalized product.

On the back, we have the next theme: Doctor Strange. As expected by now, Funko puts up a movie-themed box in time for the said movie's premier; allowing subscribers to enjoy the movie a little better, especially when you get an exclusive Hulkbuster Pop!

Continuing with the next guaranteed item, we have a leaping Spider-Man Pop! I absolutely love Pop!s in action poses but I do have some nit-picks with this toy.

Skipping the talk about quality issues (i.e. paint splotches and slanted head), the toy seems to lack contrast in terms of paint details. Because this is a comic-inspired Spidey Pop!, I feel that the web lines all over his body should be painted black to make it look more comic-ish and less plain. With the lack of black lines, this Pop! could almost be passed off as Civil War Spider-Man where the lines are hardly visible. I also feel that the pose could've been designed better. While Funko states that it is a leaping pose, it seems to be based off the wall-climb pose in the Spider-Man box teaser. I also feel that a swinging or jumping pose with webs shooting out of his wrist would've looked so much more amazing and dynamic. However, one thing I absolutely thank Funko for are how his eyes are designed (say "NO!!" to circle Spidey eyes).

Iron Man: Underoos!

The next guaranteed item is a wearable. Notice why I didn't say "shirt"?

That's right, for the first time in the MCC, we got a cap! Now, although it is nice to see new things in our boxes and the cap does look pretty cool, a cap is one of the items most MCC subscribers hate. 1) The "free" size does not fit everyone. 2) Not everyone likes wearing a cap. 3) Who wouldn't want a cool Spider-Man shirt?! With majority of the subscribers raging Funko with mean comments and threats of unsubscribing, hopefully we'll get to see at least see different sizes in the future.

The last guaranteed item is the Amazing Spider-Man #16 Pop! Variant Cover comic. The cover features the exact same pose as the Pop! Although the art looks simple yet pretty, I find it lacking details for a cool and dynamic Spider-Man art cover. I'm not sure about other collectors but I personally would've liked these variant covers to be based on the issue's original cover but with the difference being the characters Pop!-styled.

The last item in the box is also something we've gotten for the first time; a Spider-Man Fabrikations doll.

While I'm not a plushy collector, I do have to say that the doll looks really cute. As marketed by Funko, the Fabrikations line is actually meant for collectors as they can be displayed standing on their feet. This Spider-Man Fabrikations was also omitted from regular retail just so that it could be made exclusive and available to MCC subscribers! How awesome is that?!

Price Breakdown:
1) Spider-Man Pin $5
2) Spider-Man Patch $5
3) Spider-Man Pop! $30
4) Spider-Man Pop! Top (Cap) $20
5) Amazing Spider-Man #16 Pop! Variant Cover Comic $5
6) Spider-Man Fabrikations $25
Total: $90

While the price of a new comic costs about $10-12 in Singapore, a Pop! Variant Cover comic from the MCC box often only sells when they're around $4-5. Overall, I am not too happy with this box. Even though the value remains above its cost, the box still lacks the items subscribers truly want. I was also hoping we'd get a variety of different Spideys in this box instead of an all-Amazing Spider-Man box. I guess Funko is saving up for a Spiderverse box in time to come.

While I was counting down to the closing of the Spider-Man box, Funko announced this new toyline on their blog; Pint Size Heroes. This news was released the day before the closing of the box and damn was I totally expecting to see at least one of them in this box! It would've been really great for MCC subscribers to have an exclusive "first" in getting these new toys. Real bummer.

What are your thoughts on this box, folks? Are you looking forward to the Doctor Strange box?
