[Review] Factory Overrun Marvel Legends Civil War Black Panther

The Marvel Legends Civil War Black Panther figure has always been the most wanted from the Build-A-Figure (BAF) Giant Man wave. Even after so many months since its release, online resellers are still selling them for around $50-60 due to its high demand. But, luckily for those who aren't crazy enough to spend that kind of money, factory overrun Black Panther figures have started showing up in the Chinese market.

Are factory overrun figures knockoffs? The answer is no. These figures are actually manufactured more than the number of packaging materials (boxes and plastic trays) hence the term "overrun". They are as good (or sometimes as bad) as their official counterparts. Some of them have minor paint splotches just like the official figures. The plastic used is also the same where the forearms, claws and neck deco are all made of a softer plastic. However, some sales reviews of this figure mentioned that their figure's head ball joints are slightly slanted to the side. Having such defects was probably what made these figures unsuitable for sale in the official line and thus ended up in the Chinese market. Either way, such joints could be easily fixed with heating and these figures could act as a cheaper alternative to the over-priced official products sold by online resellers. Now that we've cleared things up, let's take a look at this great figure.

The details on this figure are just spectacular. It has all the intricate details and lines spanning across his body just like Black Panther's design in the movie. Kudos to the designers who brought Black Panther to life in such an amazing way.

The details on the head are also crazily detailed and I absolutely love how menacing and cool it looks.

The figure also comes with an unmasked head featuring the likes of actor Chadwick Boseman (although not entirely perfect).

Sadly, the figure only comes with this pair of tensed open-palm hands. It would've been great if Hasbro included an extra pair of closed fists. With such a pair of hands, it really limits the number of poses we could put the figure in without making it look unnatural.

The head rotates on a ball joint and there's also a hinge in the neck for it to look up and down.

The shoulders can only go this close to the body (making it look like gorilla arms)...

And this much (little) across the chest.

There's also a bicep swivel, double-jointed elbow and wrist rotation and pivot.

The figure also has an ab crunch and waist swivel. I honestly don't like the ab crunch as it makes the figure look like it has a broken back from behind. However, it does help in making the figure look sleeker when it is in a neutral position.

The hips are on ball joints that could extend the legs out this far with both feet flat on the ground.

There's also thigh swivel, double-jointed knees and ankle pivots.

Winter Soldier: I didn't kill your father.
Black Panther: Then why did you run?
Winter Soldier: Who the f**k wouldn't?!

I really love how great this figure turned out. It is not often that we get highly accurate movie figures with such amazing proportions and details from the Marvel Legends line. The only downside about this figure are the lack of better articulation in the shoulders and interchangeable hands. With the arms sticking out like that, it is impossible to get Black Panther in a neutral pose. However, all these are just tiny nit-picks compared to how cool he actually looks. If you can't wait till 2018 for a new Black Panther figure when his solo film comes out, I highly recommend getting this figure while it's still available.

What are your opinions on this iteration of Black Panther? Are you looking forward to his solo film in 2018?
