[Review] Marvel Collector Corps December 2016 X-Men Unboxing

What better way to end (or start since it's already January when the box arrived in SG) the year other than with a box featuring the long-awaited and fan-favorite series: the X-Men!

While I'm pretty much one who hopped onto the Marvel train with the first MCU Iron Man movie, I grew up watching the X-Men movies and playing their old video games. Along with many other fans who grew up in the 90s, I have high expectations for this box especially when Funko teased a Pop! Ride back in October last year. Now, let's find out if this box lives to our expectations!

  Box art on the inside

As usual, let's begin with the pin and patch.

The pin features Magneto's helmet from a 3/4 side view perspective while the patch features the arguably popular X-Woman: Storm. While it is awesome to have Magneto for the pin, I'm not sure why Funko chose to go with the side view instead of front; considering how all of the past pins had the characters or objects facing forward. I feel that a front view would've also made it look more menacing. Slight bummer but still really cool nonetheless. As for the Storm patch, the only minor gripe I have is how the letters are done unprofessionally. If you look closely, their threads actually connect to the inner circle and let me tell you, this has never happened before.

Next, we have the Champions #1 Cyclops Pop! Variant Cover comic.

I have to say, it is rather disappointing that Funko chose this series considering how it doesn't exactly involve the X-Men other than teenage Cyclops. There so many other ongoing stories featuring the X-Men team that could be a more viable option. However, even with all this said, the cover does look pretty sick. It features X-Men leader Cyclops in his classic outfit; something long-time X-Men fans would love. One gripe with its design is how the teenage Cyclops in Champions dons an entirely different costume; making the cover an unsuitable representation for the series. Funko should've just used a more suitable series like X-Men '92 to overcome these issues but someone high up in Funko decided "Nope, I love Champions" so there we have it. Speaking of the Cyclops's costume in Champions, a Pop! would be so awesome!

Onto the wearable, we get a shirt! As I had hoped!

I love this ringer shirt! It's great because it doesn't make you look all geeky to the point you feel shy wearing it out in public especially in a judging society such as in Singapore! However, a geek in me really wanted a Pop! shirt featuring the X-Men members facing off against Magneto. While this shirt is pretty awesome, it is slightly smaller in its overall sizing compared to the Pop! shirts we've gotten in the past. You may want to take note of this if you decide to back-order the box or buy the shirt from an online seller.

Other than the Pop! Ride that was teased, another vinyl figure was included in this box! Lo and behold, the debut of the Rock Candy line, featuring... Mystique!

The Rock Candy toyline finally makes its debut in the MCC with the sexy shapeshifter Mystique! While there are only a few Marvel Rock Candy figures, I thought Mystique would be highly sought after since it is, afterall, only available through the MCC. However, over a few weeks of observing its sales on online buy/sell sites, it seems that isn't exactly popular. Nevertheless, it IS a very pretty figure. Similar to other Rock Candy figures, Mystique is detailed and has proportions of a Disney Princess, which honestly looks good and would be a very nice gift to your geek girlfriend or geeky female friend 'coz us geeks don't find love easily. That said, a Rock Candy line may not be appreciated by male subscribers of the MCC though it may very well be a keeper for hardcore X-Men fans who have not seen a Mystique toy done right for so long.

Saving the best for last... the Wolverine's Motorcycle Pop! Ride!

Truth be told, I had my doubts about how great it actually is judging by the unbox video Funko released. But now, with the Pop! Ride in hand, it is just so spectacular. The attention to detail definitely deserves more than two thumbs up. Every small detail on the bike has been well-painted; dirt marks on the wheels, oil smudge all over the silver of the engine and the crisp fire decal.

What's more? Logan could be removed from the bike to stand next to his motorcycle!

This allows for a great number of ways to display him with his bike. Did I mention that this is also the first time a Pop! Ride is included in an MCC box? Well, it is! Thank you, Funko!

Although the Wolverine's Motorcycle Pop! Ride was expected by many, I think its design and execution definitely exceeded their expectations with how well it turned out. There were also some who said that they have too many Logan Pop!s and wanted Cyclops/Beast pilot the Blackbird Jet as the Pop! Ride, which would most definitely be awesome, yet too big and expensive for Funko to produce for the MCC. However, as a new collector of Pop! figures, I say this Pop! Ride is definitely worth keeping.

3) Champions #1 Cyclops Pop! Variant Cover Comic $5

As always, here's the card that gives us information on the concepts and finalized designs of the items (though there's a slight change in the format where they talk about the characters' powers) and also the reveal of the next theme:

 Superhero Showdowns!

Overall, this box is pretty amazing and definitely worth its price. The pin, shirt and vinyl figures are also too great an item for X-Men fans to miss.

What do you like about this month's box, X-Men fans? What characters are you hoping to see face-off in February's Superhero Showdowns box?
